Mama Fm 101.7, 2001 – to date. Provides an interactive, accessible medium for the underprivileged women and other marginalized groups in rural and semi urban communities. The main objective is to provide easy-to-use development oriented information for the transformation of the rural women’s lives. The radio reaches between 200-250 km radius from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The radio has helped women learn about business, about the dangers of domestic violence and broadcasting among others.
The Rural Outreach Program ROP 1996 to date. A nationwide project geared towards fighting vulnerability, isolation, inaccessibility and powerlessness, focused on the provision and dissemination of information as a major tool for development. The ROP also gives the women involved an opportunity to express their issues, feelings and concerns through the implementation of participatory training, formation of radio listeners’ clubs and information sharing networks. Get Smart Rural Women 2003-2010 where women were provided with information and skills to enable them get involved in local government development programs such as NAADS –promote accountability.
Prevention of Domestic Violence:
Here the organization has carried out projects like the Gender And Education Program which has been running since 2009 to date with a goal to give education in gender, communication, human rights and domestic violence.
The Other Voice
Printed in 5 local languages (English, Luganda, Runyakitara, Luo & Ateso) as a News Paper Pull Out, once a month and inserted in the national news paper daily the New Vision. The Other Voice brings issues of the least heard on the national agenda through media coverage to inform policy.
Civic Education on Electoral Processes
To help the masses understand the dynamics of democratic electoral processes. UMWA designs educational messages on governance issues to reach the whole country, train journalists in electoral processes in order to ensure that citizens are informed and are able to choose their leaders.
This project helps women get empowered and make choices of preferred leaders without provoking the man’s fury and helps to increase a gender balanced media reporting.
Media and Child Sexual Abuse
To design a code of conduct for media practitioners with regard to reporting on sexually abused children. 100 journalists trained in child rights issue, 21 editors dialogue on the issue & agree to give space to the issues and radio listeners groups on child sexual abuses formed in Kisaasi area.
This project led to increase in the number of journalists submitting stories on the abuses.
Reproductive Health Projects
Awareness creation on the services provided and where they could be accessed but also highlighting gaps for redress. 180 women reached through community dialogues. 2.5 – 3.5 million people reached through radio programs and messages.
Through this project, we found out that the community is demanding for more services, and especially to be brought near to them. The community is also increasingly becoming critical of government’s intervention and the latter listening and improving on delivery.
